Espionage, a chess game played with living pawns, has seldom been waged as tensely and ingeniously as in this driving and dazzlingly wrought novel.

British agent Richard Conroy of the special Defense Information Department has been betrayed in West Berlin and treated to several weeks of the KGB's hospitality in the cellars of the Lubianka -- or so he says.  Suddenly he is freed in exchange for Garnett, a top-level traitor under thirty years' sentence in England.  Why?  Conroy's ruthless and relentlessly professional chief, Goss, must learn why and how such an experienced hand could have been snapped up.  Conroy knows that only his colleague and estranged lover Karen Dewar knew of his mission, and so she must have fingered him.  Or could it have been Goss himself?

So engrossing is the mystery of this triple gavotte of traducement that one must be wrenched away to the fact that it is being daned on the very brink of doom for the West, involving the secets of NATO's deployment of missiles in Europe and the stunningly sophisticated treachery of Garnett.  The fateful interlock of betrayal at the most intimate level and the terrifying prospect of nuclear destruction is what makes this brilliantly mortised novel tick, and tick, and tick . . . .
