The mysterious beauty of the South African wilds haunts the pages of this romantic novel about a young woman's journey to an unknown lover.

Alice Lang, a young London nurse, has always been drawn by the lure of Africa, an interest intensified by four years of correspondence with game warden Andrew Miller.  When Alice's mother dies, she follows Andrew's urging and flies to the game preserve at Valaba.  There she will meet him and, she hopes, marry him.

An unforeseen complication arises during the journey across the preserve as Alice finds herself becoming greatly attracted to Rusty Miller, Andrew's younger brother who has been sent to be her guide.  When they reach their destination and Alice meets Andrew, she has several important decisions to make.

The story moves quickly, held always by the strong thread of the journey and highlighted by forest incidents.  A ring of poachers is discovered, a native is severely wounded as part of a mysterious ritual, and Rusty is called upon to test his skill as a marksman against the strength of a colossal rogue elephant.  Before the trip is completed a shocking accusation is made against Alice Lang which threatens her happiness, but helps her to find her decision.

From her own familiarity with the region, the author vividly portrays the dangers and beauties of the jungle, the fascination of the animal life, and the strange beliefs and rituals of the natives.
