2 McCall’s Book of Wonderful ONE-DISH Meals 1972 Cookbook Lot HBDJ 0841501599 Not BCE Pls Read

Best part of a good cookbook is sharing same with a loved one to cook recipes together and share reviews. I have fond memories of sharing this pleasure with my mother. When Mom got older and didn’t have the stamina to cook, I did the cooking from my book and she enjoyed reading the recipes from her same book, like a novel, picking out those she’d ask me to prepare. Then we’d review the outcome, date and enter comments next to the recipes in the book. Later in life, she especially enjoyed the older era recipes that she remembered in her prime cooking for my dad. Those cookbooks became beautiful memories for me after she passed. Such joy we shared! And now my sons enjoy reading the dated comments remembering Grandma’s love, glad for the cookbook keepsake.

Titled McCall’s Book of Wonderful One-Dish Meals copyright 1972 by the McCall Publishing Co, edited by Kay Sullivan, ISBN 0841501599, not book club editions. Both non-illustrated cookbooks are hardbound with dust-jackets, measure approx 6” x 8-1/2” with 212 pages and includes Table of Contents and Index, Foreword, Introduction. I particularly appreciate the Index layout - in addition to categorizing the food group types; ie, soups, stews, etc, then the recipe names … it also lists separately the main ingredient types; ie, beef, chicken, etc, then the recipe names. Each book originally sold for $5.95 back in the 70’s, as indicated on dust-jacket flaps.

Contents:
Obviously Casseroles ~ Soups Can Do It ~ Salads as a Main Course ~ Savory Stews and Rewarding Ragouts ~ Some Have a Foreign Accent ~ Top It with a Crust, Dot It with Dumplings ~ Quick and Easy Combinations ~ Speaking of One-Dish Meals.

Quoted from Dust-Jacket:
Busy homemakers need no longer limit themselves to tuna-fish casseroles or quick macaroni-and-cheese suppers. McCall’s Book of Wonderful One-Dish Meals offers a tantalizing assortment for soups, stews, ragouts, casseroles, hot pots, meat pies, salads - even some tasty variations on the favorite standbys - that guarantee nourishing and appetizing meals.

Here are elaborate main courses for company dinners and buffets, as well as hearty everyday meals for the family. There are wonderful combination dishes, the best in fine American fare, plus scores of tempting meals with a foreign accent. Try Hungarian Goulash for Sunday suppers, warm-up, or Coq au Vin or Paella Valenciana for that important party. Black-Bean Soup, Cioppino, Beef and Eggplant Bake, and Veal Stew with Sausage become complete dinners when served with crusty bread, green salad, and dessert.

Soups, stews, and casseroles automatically come to mind as traditional one-dish standbys, but salads too can make a substantial and attractive main course. Plan a brunch, for example, around our Ginger-and-Fruit Salad Mold, a midsummer luncheon around Ripe-Olive Salad Bowl, or a picnic around a hearty potato salad - served hot or cold in French or German Style. Fuit Salad Tropicana makes an attractive low-calorie treat that does not have to be confined to diet days. You will find dozens of other recipes for tempting salads, along with suggestion for salad dressings and garnishes.

One-dish meals are, of course, economical as well as delicious. Leftover foods can be immediately disguised in dishes such as Turkey Tetrazzini, Hamburger Stroganoff, or Frankfurter Goulash. This new cookbook cuts not only costs to a minimum, but preparation time as well, so that the cook spends less time in the kitchen and can enjoy mealtimes with family and guests.

Convenience is another bonus of one-dish cookery. In these pages you will find helpful advice on advance cooking and freezing. If last-minute guests arrive for dinner, healthy appetites can still be satisfied with nutritious and easy one-dish meals you have thoughtfully cooked ahead and frozen for these occasions. Advance cooking is a good solution to daily meal preparation and for special occasions as well. This book suggests ways to plan ahead for parties, take advantage of food sales, or give yourself a holiday from the kitchen altogether. The ease of one-dish meals is a boon to any cook but especially to beginners, working women, tired commuters, and newly liberated husbands.

Economical, easy, elegant, and delicious, this collection of recipes is well named McCalls’s Book of Wonderful One-Dish Meals.
