Pools specifically built for bathing are known to have existed as long ago as 3000 B.C.  But not until the creation of the grand and complex pools of Rome did swimming become a recreational activity.

Swimming pools in the form of public plunges and health spas enjoyed a surge of popularity during the mid-nineteenth century.  In the early 1900's, only a privileged few could afford to build or even own private pools.  Today, however, a private swimming pool is not an uncoomon luxury.

Sunset's first edition of Swimming Pools was published in 1959.  At that time, new construction methods had helped to lower installation costs considerably so that owning a private swimming pool was no longer restricted to the wealthy.  Since then a rise in population and income, combined with changing attitudes and increased suburban living, has accelerated the desire for swimming pools so greatly that by 1969 nearly a million in-ground pools had been installed in the United States.

The swimming pool industry has undergone considerable changes.  New techniques for construction have been developed, standards have been formed, and extensive chemical research has been conducted.  The potential pool owner can choose from a wide selection of pool styles and types.  Reliable contractors, because of strong competition, have learned to work closely with the customer to achieve complete satisfaction.

Despite the increasing demand for and availability of pools, many people discover that acquiring and owning one involves a great deal more than they had expected.  The intent of this book is to provide the information a pool owner needs.  The book goes into various aspects of owning a swimming pool, from planning it to maintaining and enjoying it.

Condition:  Used.  Paperback.  Covers and pages are tanning from age.  There's store stickers on the front cover.  Binding is beginning to split at the covers and first/last page, but pages are in tact.
