Astrophytum Asterias tolerate very high temperatures. They grow in full sun even as seedlings, but some growers further south report that they need some light shade in summer which is typical for a small flat cactus. Water regularly but carefully in summer, they don't need large amounts of water and definitely don't like to stay wet at the roots.
They are moderately hardy in winter, certainly below freezing and reported below 18F in the desert. Must be dry in winter. None of the Astrophytums can tolerate being cold and wet at the same time. They will tend to flatten in long dry periods and then fatten up when watered again. Be gentle after they have been kept dry, they will split thier sides when watered too suddenly.
